The Review: Maybelline Velvet Lip Pencils

I've been waiting for these babies to reach Australian shores since the moment I laid eyes on them, and they're finally here! I just about gasped when I saw the new addition to the Maybelline counter at my local pharmacy, and instantly started swatching away until I found two shades that I really thought my collection was lacking - I'm trying to avoid buying more nudey pinks, but it's inevitable.

The first thing I noticed about these was just how creamy and opaque they were with just a tiny swipe. It was almost unbelievable and I'd never come across a pencil format with a formula like this. I have only swatched the NARS velvet lip pencils, so I cannot confirm if they're an exact dupe, but I can completely understand the comparison nonetheless. There is definitely a noticeable scent as well, but to me it smells like pink donuts, so I'm a fan!

I picked up the colours 'Red Essential' and 'Pink so Chic', the  first a classic red and the second not so pink, but more a mauvey-berry shade which I kind of didn't need another of (oops). Applying them to the lips is a dream, especially with their format. They are chubby sticks, but the tips are perfect for getting a neat, crisp line.

As for longevity, it's as good as any creamy-matte. It lasts a good while, but you will definitely need a reapplication after food or drink. This is a small price to pay for a formula that looks matte, but is incredibly creamy, and I don't mind sacrificing it. I only have two major issues with these. The first, that the colour selection isn't the best and I would love to see some more wearable shades in there instead of so many brights. The second, is that I'm a little confused on how to sharpen these once they're blunt - recommendations?

Overall, I highly recommend these to anyone, but especially those who are scared of mattes and their drying qualities. These are creamy, opaque and just a dream to work with!

  1. "Patiently" waiting for these to arrive in Asia, do they fit in conventional sharpeners?

P.S. what nail polish are you wearing? It's pretty!

  2. I bought a couple of these two - the nude, and the orangey-red. I'm so impressed with how opaque and creamy they are but I haven't had the chance to wear them properly yet! These two shades look gorgeous as well :) It is annoying that you need to sharpen them because of product wastage though!

  4. The sharpening thing is a pain, isn't it? It's like the NYX jumbo eye pencils all over again. The nude colour looked really pretty, that might have to be my next purchase. x

  6. Hahaha, I definitely know what you mean by a "patient" wait - it's so not fair. They wouldn't fit in a conventional sharpener, they're about the same size as the NYX jumbo eye pencils. My nail polish is from Sportsgirl, I can't remember the name though! x

  8. Oh I haven't noticed these in our drugstores here in Canada but I hope they're here! You definitely need a larger pencil sharpener - NYX and Sephora sell them.

  15. LOVE both shades but especially 'Red Essential'.. Try to buy the Essence pencil sharper. IT has a larger hole on one end you can sharper super fat pencils with easily xxx

  16. i got so excited when i saw these in priceline too, only they didn't have the shades i wanted (the three reds including the dupes for red square and cruella) so i had to track them down and i was so glad when i finally did. i do have red square and cruella already and the shades aren't exacy but they're pretty close, and for $10 the maybelline versions are definitely worth picking up! i really like them.
