My Day In Pictures #1

This is a series I have wanted to start for a really long time, but I've just never had a day full of "photo worthy" moment. Usually they're unglamorous and I look back on what I captured and I just don't feel inspired to share them. Today was different, and I am so excited to share my first 'Day in Pictures' post.

Today was a really relaxed day but a productive one at that. I got up early to study and catch up on some first week of uni admin type stuff and snuck in a lecture or two as well. Because it was a chilly day today, I finally got to wear my oversized ombre sweater. I bought it a week a go and have been pining for the right weather, but it's been too warm up until now.

I spent most of the afternoon working, but a bit later on I went for a drive and looked around a few shops to get out of the house and take a break. I have been really nervy when it comes to driving lately, as I finally got the thumbs up from my instructor to book my test so I'm finding flaws in everything and psyching myself out.

What was your day like today?

Surviving the Exam Period

Unfortunately for most of us exams are unavoidable. For me currently, it is exam time and I am working my way through with the thought of a week at the beach to ease my pain. It really can feel like you're going crazy when staring at those books for too long, so I've compiled a list of things that keep me feeling level.

Top Four Posts Of 2014

As a psychology student I have a love-hate relationship with statistics. I find studying the sum of their parts difficult and unsatisfying, but the end result always excites me. This is the same when it comes to blogging, the only thing that excites me about blog stats is seeing the end product, and for me, that is which posts do the best. Popular posts are such a funny thing as those you think will be a hit rarely make the top mark, and those that creep up there are the least expected.

The 20-Something Crisis

I'm sure that any twenty-something who reads this title will instantly understand what it is that I'm talking about and may even feel a wash of relief at the fact that they are not alone. We hear so much about the midlife crisis and the stage of uncertainty between high school and university, so we are prepared for these and feel lost yet still very normal - but why does no one talk about the twenty-something crisis at length? Before I saw a couple of posts like this popping up across the blogging community, I was feeling quite alone with what I was dealing with until I realised that almost everyone else in my age bracket was going through something very similar.

Stress Less

Due to a number of things going on at the moment I have found myself feeling very stressed and overwhelmed. Sometimes things are out of our control so we can't take away the stressful factor. In these cases the only thing we can do is push through and try to stay as calm as possible. These are a few things I have found have helped me and just things to remember in general...

1. Look After Yourself
Self-care can take the back burner when things are hectic or overwhelming. I am someone who forgets to eat when they are busy, which is not good. I also sacrifice sleep, be it through working late or not being able to sleep due to overthinking. Eating and sleeping are two vital parts of our health and should be put before anything. I am still someone who skips lunch when they are doing a lot, but I really am working on it.

2. Take A Moment
When you are on the edge of panic, you need to learn drop what you're doing and take a moment to calm down. You are not going to do anything productive in this time and you are doing more harm than good, so it is crucial to just lay down or do something relaxing for a few minutes. If I'm at my desk I will often open a YouTube video and after the ten minutes have passed I will often feel more level headed and ready to continue with the task at hand. Any activity you enjoy where there is no room to think will help in the very same way.

3. Write It Down
There is nothing that soothes my overwhelmed soul like a list. Breaking big tasks down into bite-sized portions is a tip I have always stuck by and truly believe in. Not only does the task seem more manageable this way, but you have more things to cross off your list, giving you a motivational boost. A big ten page long to-do list can also induce panic, so breaking your lists up on a day-by-day basis so you delegate X tasks to this day and Y tasks to this day makes everything seem so much more manageable. I really love the app "Todoist" as you can do just that and even plan to-dos months in advanced and set notifications if necessary. It's a great way to feel on top of your week and you can access it at any given time through apps and their web version!

4. Say No
There are some instances where saying no comes easily and others where it doesn't seem like an option at all. This is highly subjective, but if you are feeling overwhelmed do not volunteer to do something because you feel guilty. Sometimes you have to put yourself and your tasks first, and while it can be hard, it is necessary.

5. Reward Yourself
During exam periods I tend to not leave enough room to wind down and have me-time as I see it as time not spent studying. It is so important to set aside time in every day just to do something for you, even if it's just taking a bath. These are the times where we relax and let go off what it building up anxiety wise, so it is crucial and should be prioritised.

What do you do when you seem to be reaching the point of panic and how do you wind yourself down?

A Winter's Day Indoors

It was a sunny turned miserable turned sunny again kind of day today and I spent it all indoors. Uni started back this week, so I spent some time organising and getting things together for my new set of classes. It was crazy cold so I opted for snuggling up in bed to get things done, which I know, I know, it's bad for productivity but I couldn't resist.

I settled down with my laptop and planned out my life for the next month. Looking at my computer and notebooks makes my screen name obvious. I've had a few questions, someone even asking if I live in New York, but alas I do not. It's one of those places that you are drawn to and long for without ever having been there. It's always been like that for me, I can't explain it. When I thought of my username I thought long and hard, and for some reason nueyork just kept coming back to me. It's short, sharp and I love the twist on the spelling.

Earlier in the week I was feeling down and cheered myself up with an online splurge which arrived in the mail today - I'm sure you can identify what! You are definitely going to hear more on these in the very near future. I've spent a lot of time lately thinking about my content and I realised that I don't enjoy writing flat out reviews (unless it's a product I'm super excited about) so why am I writing so many of them? I've been jotting down ideas non-stop for posts that aren't review oriented, so hopefully this is the start of me only posting things I'm over the moon about.

Thinking about content has got me curious - what are your favourite kinds of posts to read? Mine are definitely lifestyle and anything that is very personalised to the writer.

Life Lately #1

I finished my exams and ever since have been constantly on the go, running piled up errands, and catching up with friends I've been waiting to see all semester - hence the lack of posts. When I have had a spare moment to myself, I've been catching up on my TV shows I missed while I was busy with school. Kardashians, as always, was at the very top of my priority list!

Unfortunately, I still have a few more jobs to get done before I can truly settle down, enjoy my break and with that produce the content that's been lacking lately. I have lots of tasks that I have put off this long and know I will put off even longer if I don't get them done now! So hopefully by the end of the week I'll have some content I'm proud of up on here. That's all for now, I just wanted to check in!

Who else is on break from school or university at the moment and what are your plans?

Study Essentials

Studying isn't fun, which is something I think we can all agree on. There are definitely ways to make it more exciting, but I don't think I will ever enjoy trying to cram all that work into just a week or two. I've gotten my studying essentials down to a tee, even if my study skills aren't so refined - you can't win them all!

Coffee is first and foremost, if you're a coffee person. Some teas offer a boost of caffeine too, but I personally love the taste of coffee and it's my first choice when I need a pick me up. I like to wake up in the morning and have a coffee before I even think about working, let it do it's thing and sometimes it's enough. Other times, I sip away while I work, but the first of the day is always the best!

When it comes to stationary you need to go hard or go home, in my eyes. I love buying cute notebooks, pens, sticky notes - you name it. Kate Spade's offerings are magical, but Typo and Target have amazing pieces too that will making your work look adorable.

Snacks are key for me, next to coffee. Chocolate is my go to study snack because I'm a chocoholic and it just makes me happy. If you want to opt for something more healthy, feel free. I'd recommend something you can nibble on so you can eat consistently through working without feeling guilty.

Finally, a little random but oh so important to me, bed socks! If it's hot, I'll opt out of these, but they just give me such a warm feeling of contentment. They keep me warm and calm while I'm realising how much work I still have to go.

What are your must haves when the study period comes around?
