Velvet Teddy
I never thought I would be the one to say this, but I am currently obsessed with nudes! For a long time I just couldn't find shades that suited me especially as I'm fair, so I figured nudes weren't for me. Over the past year I have found one or two that I really love, including the Maybelline Colour Drama Velvet Lip Pencil in 'Nude Perfection', which had to be my favourite of the bunch. When these lip pencils first launched I heard so many comparisons between 'Nude Perfection' and MACs 'Velvet Teddy' that I was instantly intrigued.
Nude Perfection
Nudes are such a tricky thing, more so than any other lip colour. I avoided them for so long because I could never find a shade that suited my skin tone - they all looked too much like I'd applied foundation to my lips. However, this Maybelline Color Drama velvet lip pencil in 'Nude Perfection' is a shade I feel would suit a lot of skin tones, especially those in that tricky fair-skin area.
It is deeper than the average nude and has a pinky brown tone to it that is flattering on even super fair skin. This is definitely one to try if you're in the same boat as me and struggle when it comes to finding that perfect nude shade, especially since the Maybelline Color Drama formula is one of my all time favourites. They are ultra pigmented, smooth, creamy and just a dream to apply due to the formula and the format. I have also seen a few comparisons of this shade to MAC's coveted Velvet Teddy, but as I don't own this shade I can't say for sure!
What is your favourite nude of all time?
The Review: Maybelline Velvet Lip Pencils
The first thing I noticed about these was just how creamy and opaque they were with just a tiny swipe. It was almost unbelievable and I'd never come across a pencil format with a formula like this. I have only swatched the NARS velvet lip pencils, so I cannot confirm if they're an exact dupe, but I can completely understand the comparison nonetheless. There is definitely a noticeable scent as well, but to me it smells like pink donuts, so I'm a fan!
I picked up the colours 'Red Essential' and 'Pink so Chic', the first a classic red and the second not so pink, but more a mauvey-berry shade which I kind of didn't need another of (oops). Applying them to the lips is a dream, especially with their format. They are chubby sticks, but the tips are perfect for getting a neat, crisp line.
As for longevity, it's as good as any creamy-matte. It lasts a good while, but you will definitely need a reapplication after food or drink. This is a small price to pay for a formula that looks matte, but is incredibly creamy, and I don't mind sacrificing it. I only have two major issues with these. The first, that the colour selection isn't the best and I would love to see some more wearable shades in there instead of so many brights. The second, is that I'm a little confused on how to sharpen these once they're blunt - recommendations?
Overall, I highly recommend these to anyone, but especially those who are scared of mattes and their drying qualities. These are creamy, opaque and just a dream to work with!
